Elon Musk has unveiled a prototype of the Tesla Roadster 2 equipped with rocket-thruster technology from his aerospace company, SpaceX. The demonstration took place in Texas, where the electric sports car was shown driving up a curved ramp and using thrusters for aerial maneuvers before landing. Musk described the vehicle as a potential flying car, capable of performing rolls and complex movements with the help of altitude controls and rear-mounted thrusters.
While the demonstration was conducted remotely to mitigate safety risks, Musk acknowledged that the vehicle might not be legal in all jurisdictions. The Roadster 2 is slated to enter production in 2028, with an expected price tag exceeding $200,000. Tesla has announced plans for various versions of the vehicle, including a performance model and a specialized variant featuring a thrust system. Additionally, a single-seat rocket version with a full flight system is proposed to be available by invitation only.
Tesla has emphasized that the flying capabilities are not intended for public road use. This demonstration underscores Musk’s ambition to merge electric vehicle technology with rocket propulsion, though practical use, safety requirements, and regulatory approval remain significant hurdles.
