The US Mint is set to release a new commemorative $1 coin this fall, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States, featuring a portrait of President Donald Trump. This announcement from the US Treasury Department signals the start of production for the coin, which has undergone some design changes since its initial concept. Notably, the coin now features a gold-colored finish as opposed to being crafted from solid gold.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the coin aims to honor America’s enduring legacy of liberty and patriotism. By highlighting the nation’s values and steadfast commitment to freedom, the coin seeks to serve as a symbol of American ideals. On the front, the coin displays a portrait of Trump, accompanied by the word “LIBERTY,” the years “1776–2026,” and the inscription “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
The reverse side showcases the iconic bald eagle from the Great Seal of the United States, along with the national motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” This imagery reinforces the themes of unity and national pride that the commemorative coin seeks to embody.
The decision to feature a living president on US currency has sparked controversy, as federal law typically restricts such representations. However, Treasury officials argue that the secretary possesses the authority to permit commemorative coin issuances in special circumstances, allowing for this exception to the general rule.
