US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order easing sanctions on Russia’s energy sector, a move that has sparked concerns about America’s ongoing support for Ukraine amidst its ongoing conflict with Russia. This decision follows recent legislation enabling the imposition of tariffs up to 100% on significant purchasers of Russian oil and gas, targeting Russia’s energy and defense sectors.
Simultaneously, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been actively seeking enhanced support from European Union leaders. After discussions in Brussels, Zelensky called for increased financial and military aid, specifically requesting an additional €70 billion, approximately US$79 billion, for the coming year, along with more Patriot air defense systems to combat Russian attacks.
The easing of sanctions has intensified strains between Washington and Kyiv, especially following Trump’s criticism of Ukraine for renewed strikes on Russian oil refineries. This tension is compounded by disruptions in satellite-based communications used by Ukrainian forces, although SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has denied his company’s involvement, and a US official has refuted any suggestion of Trump’s interference.
European leaders, meanwhile, have reiterated their commitment to supporting Ukraine. European Council President António Costa emphasized the need for continued assistance and increased pressure on Moscow. EU leaders are also assessing the additional financial requirements outlined by Kyiv.
The EU is currently distributing funds from a €90 billion loan meant to help sustain Ukraine’s financial stability through 2027. However, Ukrainian officials warn of a significant funding shortfall due to ongoing Russian attacks that continue to damage the nation’s economy and infrastructure.
Discussions have also rekindled debates about using approximately €200 billion in frozen Russian central bank assets to fund Ukraine’s defense and recovery efforts. This proposal, however, faces resistance, notably from Belgium, where a substantial portion of these assets is held.
