The United States and Europe are neck and neck at 8-8 after an eventful second day at the Solheim Cup, with Jennifer Kupcho delivering a stunning performance to thwart Europe’s attempt to take the lead. Europe faced challenges as Charley Hull and newcomer Lottie Woad struggled to make a significant impact. The English duo suffered defeats in both of their matches on Saturday, including a 6&5 loss to Alison Lee and Lauren Coughlin in the morning and another close defeat to Yealimi Noh and Andrea Lee in the afternoon.
Despite setbacks in some matches, Europe showed resilience during the morning foursomes. Maja Stark and Linn Grant secured a victory over Allisen Corpuz and world No. 1 Nelly Korda, while Leona Maguire and Esther Henseleit added another point for Europe by defeating Kupcho and Rose Zhang. The day also saw impressive performances from rookies Mimi Rhodes and Nastasia Nadaud, who secured a win for Europe.
The afternoon fourballs added tension to the competition. The United States saw victories as Noh and Andrea Lee overcame Hull and Woad, with Kim and Zhang also contributing with a win. Europe seemed poised to take the overall lead when Carlota Ciganda and Céline Boutier had a two-hole advantage over Kupcho and Lindy Duncan.
However, Kupcho turned the tide dramatically. She delivered an extraordinary 90-foot shot from off the green on the 17th hole and followed it with a remarkable 30-foot birdie on the final hole, securing a crucial point for the United States. This impressive finish ensured the teams remained tied at 8-8.
As the competition heads into its final day, the United States needs six points to retain the trophy, while Europe requires 6.5 points to reclaim it. The momentum seems to have shifted towards the defending champions, setting the stage for an exciting conclusion to the tournament.
