WhatsApp is in the process of developing a new feature that will enable iPhone users to back up their chats, photos, videos, and documents directly to WhatsApp’s own cloud storage. This feature offers an alternative to Apple’s iCloud, which has been the default backup service for iPhone users until now.
The upcoming cloud storage service from WhatsApp will reportedly include 2GB of free storage space for users. For those who require more storage, WhatsApp plans to offer paid options, with the entry-level plan providing 50GB of additional storage space. Furthermore, higher-capacity plans are also being considered to accommodate varying user needs.
Importantly, the use of WhatsApp’s cloud storage will be optional. Users will still have the option to continue using iCloud for their backups if they prefer. Additionally, those who opt for WhatsApp’s storage will reportedly have the flexibility to switch back to iCloud whenever they choose. To ensure data security, WhatsApp plans to implement end-to-end encryption by default for all cloud backups, safeguarding the information stored.
The new feature is currently undergoing testing via Apple’s TestFlight platform, though there is no confirmed date for its public release. Alongside this development for iPhone users, WhatsApp is also reportedly working on a similar cloud backup solution for Android users, aiming to expand the convenience of cloud storage across different operating systems.
